Samsung, can it catch up ?
Till a few years back, Nokia was the supreme leader when it came to mobile devices. Then came Samsung, and in a short period of time, it conquered the market with devices at every price range. But in the past few years, several new brands started emerging, especially from China. We got Xiaomi, we got BBK electronics that owns Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus, and respective sub-brands like Realme or IQOO.
The new Chinese brands follow one major strategy, capable devices at a price much lower than Samsung or a fraction of the cost of an iPhone. The marketing campaigns touted powerful chipsets, multi-lens camera system and more. One more major brand from China, Huawei launched innovative devices that directly competed with Samsung flagships. Although 2019 was not a good year for Huawei, it still shipped millions of smartphones and took the No. 2 spot in Global Smartphone Sales, surpassing Apple and just behind Samsung.
The question that now comes is, can Samsung retain its No 1 spot for long. Huawei is facing its own issues that definitely is a good sign for Samsung, but other players are slowly eating Samsung's market share. Xiaomi is maintaining its No 1 spot in the Indian market and looks to continue. Brands like Realme are launching tons of devices and growing at a very fast rate. The pressure on Samsung has forced it to launch more price-sensitive devices like the M series and major changes in the A-series.
While Samsung's S series and Note series flagships are doing well in their segment, the entire industry and markets like India are now looking to get the best devices at under $500. In markets like India, with new and first-time users are joining the smartphone user base at a rapid rate, affordable devices are getting more and more popular.
It's only a matter of time, and we will soon find out how the new M series is doing for Samsung and can their flagships could get into more hands considering the $1000 plus price tag.
